I was brought up and educated in East Kilbride. After completing my secondary school education in the town I joined the Army. I initially served as an air defence missile and radar operator and later went on to serve as a commando gunner in 3 Commando Brigade.
On leaving the Army, with an exemplary military service record, I attended Sheffield Hallam University and graduated with a first class BA (Hons) degree in Social Work Studies, together with a university prize for outstanding achievement.
My legal studies were undertaken at the University of Huddersfield, where I obtained my Postgraduate Diploma in Law, and at the University of Sheffield, where I obtained my Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice.
I qualified as a solicitor in England; training and practising with leading Yorkshire based commercial law firm Keeble Hawson. I later went on to practise as a corporate solicitor at MacRoberts LLP in Glasgow, one of Scotland's pre-eminent law firms. I am also qualified as a solicitor in Scots law. I am currently a non-practising solicitor.
I tutor on the company law elective, and support post-graduate law students in my role as a practice manager, at the University of Strathclyde's Centre for Professional Legal Studies. In addtion to this role, I also teach business and law to accountancy students on the ACCA and CIMA professional accountancy courses.
I live in East Kilbride with my wife and 2 young children.
